Emily's Chapel Dedication

George Lewis (1802 - 1858) was buried in a now unmarked grave in Emily's Chapel Cemetary  in the Lower Carver Creek Valley on county road 118  to county road 119 off of State Highway 49  northwest of Sabula, MO.

Download topo map showing location of Emily's Chapel Cemetary.  - upper left of Section 28 - the church was located across the road.

This is more likely to be the dedication of the Emily's Chapel Church.  The church was built on land donated by John Lewis, brother of George, and named after his wife, Nancy Emiline Dunn.

Perhaps some of these folks are your Lewis Relatives!  Can you help me identify anyone?

Hi Rob,

I have talked to you before when we were first researching the Lewis clan.

I love the picture that you posted on your web site and I think I can name a few of the people.

I am sending pictures of known Lewis's for you to compare.  Della Lewis was born Nov. 4, 1886 and in the grave picture appears to be close to a year old, which would date this picture at around 1887.  I "believe" this is a dedication of the church and cemetery instead of a grave cleaning. The women are really dressed and the men appear to have on suits which would not be grave cleaning attire.

John & Emiline Lewis and Henry & Arvazena McKenzie donated land and money to have the cemetery and the Church built.   Sarah Jane Mckenzie who married Samuel Lewis died in childbirth 16 Aug 1878. She is buried in the old part of the cemetery, right near the big tree on the right side of the picture.
